A Labour of Love: Reviving a Cherished Chest of Drawers
From the outset, this chest of drawers captured my affection. Despite its weathered appearance and cracked finish, its inherent beauty remained undeniable, prompting a restoration project fueled by love and dedication. Though the challenges of repairing the cracked top were daunting, I remained steadfast in my commitment to preserving the drawer fronts, determined to breathe new life into this cherished piece.
Turning to Lignocolor’s ‘Deep Sea’ blue-green chalk paint for the frame, I envisioned a hue that would complement the chest’s character while imparting a fresh, revitalized look. For the drawer fronts, I opted for linseed oil, a gentle treatment to showcase their natural allure. Delicate gold edging and modern drawer handles added a touch of refinement, completing the transformation.
Inside the drawers and chest frame, a layer of shellac not only addressed any lingering odors and prevented bleed-through but also enhanced the wood’s aged patina. However, the true essence of the restoration lay in a subtle touch—a discreet painting of flowers in ‘Deep Sea’ on the sides of each drawer, revealed only upon opening.
To protect the finish and deepen the colors, layers of wax were applied with care, offering both durability and a subtle sheen. The result was more than a mere restoration; it was a heartfelt endeavor—a testament to the enduring beauty of craftsmanship and the power of restoration driven by passion and care.
Now, as the chest of drawers stands renewed, it embodies not only functional utility but also a sense of cherished heritage, ready to grace its surroundings with warmth and character for years to come.
